About Us

Our Story

For the last 80 years, State Manufactured Homes in Scarborough has been a fixture along Route 1, providing an affordable place for people to call home.  With its beautiful homes and manicured lawns, people come into the sales center expecting to pay a lot more than what they hear from the sales staff.

The company was founded by Bob and Agnes Desfosses, and currently operated by the founders’ daughter Theresa Desfosses and her daughter Tina, son-in-law Gordon Smith and their son Jacob Smith.  For nearly eight decades, the Desfosses family has worked to build up their business, along with the reputation, for being honest, hardworking people who sell well-built factory made homes and who stand behind their product.  The manufactured housing communities of Hillcrest (for residents 55 years and older) and Pinecrest (an all age community) both conveniently located right off of Route 1 in Scarborough, have been continuously updated throughout the years, and each are shining examples of how to do things the right way in the manufactured housing industry.

The Desfosses family welcomes you to tour our modern manufactured housing communities and visit our beautifully appointed model homes.  Pinecrest Manufactured Housing Community is our all age community located in Scarborough and our award winning Hillcrest 55+ Retirement Community located directly behind our sales center at 126 US Route 1 in Scarborough combines new and preowned luxury homes with the affordability and accessibility factored into our convenient Scarborough location.  We are 5 minutes from just about anywhere in the Greater Portland Area.

Hillcrest is consistently recognized as an industry standard to meet in premier 55+ manufactured housing communities nationwide – come see us and find out why!  All of the houses feature the latest in building methods, all 2 by 6, 16 on center wall construction, all homes meet or exceed Energy Star Certification requirements with the highest level of insulation, draft stops, programmable thermostats and Low E Argon, tilt in windows.  The kitchens in these homes are simply gorgeous and just perfect for entertaining.  The amount of storage is incredible – room sized closets and walk up attics are common to see and a delightful surprise if you have not been in a manufactured home recently!

The community boasts a full time dedicated program director, a NEW 24 passenger wheelchair accessible bus, and a lovely recreation center with Bingo, potluck suppers, game nights, exercise equipment, a commercial kitchen for residents to use, a community vegetable garden and walking trails along the Nonesuch River.  The homes are located on leased land, with very affordable monthly rates, with public water and public sewer systems, paved two car driveways, landscaping and hardscaping packages included.  Some of the newest homes even have onsite built attached one or two car garages on some lots!  Hillcrest really is like a little city.  We plow the streets, pick up the trash with a company-owned trash truck…and because it is barely visible from Route 1 it is one of the best kept secrets in the Greater Portland area!

So now that the secret is out, give Tina or Tracy a call and see what State Manufactured Homes has to offer you.  New and preowned homes are available in most every price range.  One or two well behaved pets are welcome.  The sales center is open daily from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment (except Sundays – it is a family business after all!)  Call 883-2512 for more information and to schedule a tour.
